Welcome to AfriDischarge dashboard

The AfriDischarge v1(Also called VegDischarge v1) dashboard offers a range of analytical views tailored for different scales and applications. This tool provides high-resolution monthly discharge data for over 64,000 river segments across Africa, generated using advanced hydrological modeling and remote sensing.

How was the AfriDischarge produced?

The discharge is estimated from the USGS's VegET hydrological model, which simulates runoff at a 1-km resolution, and the NCAR's mizuRoute routing model, which routes this runoff through Africa's river network. The dataset spans from 2001 to 2021 (with 2000 as spin up year) and integrates precipitation and vegetation data from satellite observations. Show more

Why this data matters?

Africa faces significant challenges in water resource management due to climate variability, increasing water demand, and limited observational data. The AfriDischarge dataset fills this gap by offering spatially explicit, long-term discharge records that support:
  • Water availability assessments for agriculture, urban planning, and climate adaptation.
  • Flood and drought risk management, identifying extreme hydrological events.
  • Research and policy-making, providing a foundation for sustainable water governance.

Key features of the dashboard

  • Country and Basin Flow Data: Explore river discharge trends across administrative boundaries and basins to inform national and regional water management strategies.
  • Time Series Analysis: Access historical flow data for any river segment, analyzing trends and seasonal variations.
  • Low and High Flow Analysis: Identify periods of water scarcity and high flow events for better risk assessment.
  • Perennial vs. Ephemeral Streams: Distinguish between rivers that flow year-round and those that are seasonal.
Whether you are a researcher, policymaker, or water resource manager, AfriDischarge v1 provides the tools and data needed to navigate Africa's hydrological landscape.
